Golf is one of the great American pastimes, and as a golf course manager, you want to make sure that your clientele has the best experience possible. Part of this responsibility is investing in regular maintenance for your golf carts. You might wonder how often should you have your golf cart serviced — and what maintenance does a golf cart need? The answers to these questions depend on factors such as your course’s schedule, how often carts are used, and whether they will be stored for the winter. Consider the following four steps for properly maintaining your golf carts.
Take Care of the Engine
Just like any other vehicle, the engine of your golf carts should be cared for and maintained regularly. This includes completing minor repairs and investing in routine maintenance, which can prevent problems before they arise. A mechanic who specializes in golf carts can provide services such as engine maintenance, spark plug replacement, and oil changes — all of which will minimize the chances of bigger mechanical issues appearing that will be costly and inconvenient to resolve.
Replace Battery as Needed
The engine isn’t the only part of a golf cart that requires maintenance. You will also need to eventually replace the battery, especially if your fleet consists of electric golf carts. There are two types of batteries typically used in golf carts — lead-acid and lithium — and the lifespan of your battery depends on which one you choose. While a lithium battery may only need replacing every ten years, a lead-acid battery will likely need replacing within four to five years.
Keeps Brakes Lubricated
Gold cart brakes require attention and maintenance, too. You don’t want anybody rolling into the lake because you neglected a golf cart’s brakes! One of the best ways to invest in the maintenance of your fleet is to keep the brakes of the golf carts lubricated adequately. This can be done the same way that car brakes would be lubricated—simply apply grease to the edges of the brake pads, caliper pins, and clips. Keep in mind, too, that golf cart brakes, like batteries, should be replaced every couple of years.
Prepare for Long-Term Storage

To do this, two weeks before entry into storage, you should verify that battery water levels are adequate.
