Helpful Tips for Keeping Golf Courses Open During Cold Months

The weather plays a significant role in the low seasons of golf courses. Excess winter rainfall that flooded and saturated play surfaces are normally deemed as unplayable. However, when temperatures drop and frost forms, there is always pressure to get play underway, even when there are good reasons why this should not be the case. This article outlines the concepts associated with play and ergonomic matters during low temperatures and frost. Frost, ice melt, snow cover, and rainfall are all common elements of winter that would impact the green and the ability to play golf. Are you prepared to keep operations running smoothly throughout the cold spells?

The Role of Management for the Course

The decision regarding if the course should remain open for play is the responsibility of the course superintendent or course manager. These individuals are experienced professionals with the knowledge of play requirements and the knowledge of long-term health and condition of the course and surfaces playability. They should also be in charge of the revenue production. Balancing these components will allow them to manage the course during the colder months properly.

Sometimes white frost creates ‘footprinting,’ which won’t always be an issue for golfers, but if frost has been in place overnight, it is important the management does a thorough examination. The course superintendent may need to decide on a proper opening time for the general play. Even if temperatures rise quickly, the opening time may be as late as mid-morning. It is also important to note that greens that have compromised microclimates, such as shaded or alongside water, could need more time to recover enough for the standards of playing. Often they even have to be restricted for use during colder periods. It is typically best to keep winter pin positions varied as much as possible around greens’ surfaces to avoid concentrating wear and tear. It is acceptable to use corners and placements close to the edge of a green.

Keep in mind that when there is play taking place during extended periods of low temperatures, the greater the levels of damage and the longer it will take for the green to fully recover. Be prepared to make mandates until the conditions significantly improve.

Other Considerations

Regardless of the type of course you have, how old it is, or the grass species composition, there will most likely come a time that you will have to protect play surfaces that become affected by low temperatures. Even if managing this scenario is not common for you, it will be extremely important when hit with general winter elements, and protection measures need to occur. With every courses’ unique set of perks, there will be its limitations (such as concentrated traffic areas or less buffering capacity when it comes to play). Don’t be tempted by early openings and compromise the green when trying to recover, as that may lead to irreversible damage. It all comes down to priorities in managing the course in cold conditions. Most of your members would probably rather be directed by the professionals and wait it out for a period to keep the green in the best condition possible coming out of winter, rather than jeopardize their true playing season. Tee to green insurance will be your protection from both the physical elements that could damage your course as well as what could come with customer dissatisfaction. It is up to you to be strategic about opening times and where you will allow traffic. Some winter enforcements you may want to utilize:

  • Frost greens restrictions
  • Temporary tees
  • Play mats
  • Traffic management schemes
  • Ropes and lines
  • Limited trolley use
