When it comes to a golf course, the first impression is everything. The appearance of the first tee and throughout all holes significantly impacts how players view the overall course condition and playability, which directly influences their game and satisfaction. Set-up and maintenance methods must remain consistent to ensure proper placement and flow of procedures involving:
- Tee markers and associated course fixtures
- Appropriate clean-up of divots
- Broken tees or any other debris on or near the tee surface
Maintaining this consistency can be done by training and reinforcement as outlined by management with transparent practices. When procedures don’t go as planned, your Tee to Green Insurance will be there to help.
Set-up Explained
The tee marker alignment makes all the difference for a golfer’s stance and addressing the ball. With poor alignment, the pace of the game is likely to be compromised. It also comes off as course neglect in the eyes of the members. It is important that markers are set to eliminate any distraction from a player’s field of vision. For multi-tiered tees, do not set tee markers immediately below, above, or on the slope itself. The markers are typically set one foot apart to avoid contact with nearby equipment.
Golf course markers should be widely placed so that the golfer can comfortably place the tee at their desired location. Note that they may stand outside of the tee markers. Ensure that what was designed to be a more forward tee is not set for a greater distance than what was made to be a longer tee, per course yardages. Be sure to frequently rotate tee placement throughout peak season to spread out traffic and give the time needed to tend to divots. Use a chart to keep track of tee marker locations so staff can keep up with appropriate placings. Be sure to keep the rotation consistent and take note of areas to avoid on the teeing ground.
Cleanliness and Attention to Detail
A tee ground that is messy and covered in divots is very uninviting for members. There are various methods for picking up, replacing, and filling divots, with some more crucial than others. If there is sand provided, some players will take the time to fill divots. However, that cannot be expected from every member, and some divots may be missed. It is helpful if staff who tend to the course and are in charge of filling the divots each morning. You may even want to send out a team in the afternoon to go around cleaning up and filling divots to set the course up for success for the following day.
Have ball washers and containers throughout the golf course, or if possible, at every hole. These should be checked daily for clean water. You can prevent odor build-up with detergent tablets and cleaning out the ball washers as needed. It is a nice gesture to have fresh tee towels handy with the ball washer. Make sure they are washed or replaced as needed. Also, be sure to stay on top of trash bins to avoid attracting critters. Fresh supplies and attention to detail go a long way.
