Golf club operations face an array of risks daily. Being aware of these hazards and doing what you can to prevent them can make all the difference. Be sure to take the necessary precautions to avoid injury and financial loss.
These are the main risks faced on the golf course and some tips on how to prevent them.
Personal Injury
Injury is all too common out there on the course. Your club members must give themselves plenty of time for a gentle warm-up before they begin to play—strongly encourage stretching before trying to hit a ball. Just a light warm-up can prevent injury.
Third-Party Injury
There are several famous examples of golfers hitting a wayward shot, causing serious injury to another person. There have been way too many instances of golf balls flying through the air and hitting other players or spectators. There have even been cases where people have been hit in the eye and lost their vision or lose an eye. This is why it is so important that players give out a loud shout to warn those nearby that a ball might be heading their way.
Not every golfer will yell out “fore” when they are supposed to, whether you would like them to or not, so advise all members to be very cautious of this and keep a safe distance away when fellow golfers are playing.
Shin injuries are also prevalent among the golf community, so everyone should be advised to keep a safe distance and stand back as a general rule.
Theft
When members leave their clubs and equipment outside the locker room or unguarded on the patio while socializing, they are taking the risk of being robbed. Even though you hope that your golf club is a relatively safe environment, some perpetrators will act quickly when there is an opportunity for theft. Management and members should be on alert for this and take proactive measures to prevent this from happening. Encourage all members to put their clubs in a safe space immediately after they play.
Slips and Falls
Falls are also standard on the course. Even if players wear proper footwear, there are many personal injury claims where golfers have slipped. These instances typically could have been avoided. These injuries have the potential to be very serious, but the risks of trips, slips, and falls can be much slimmer when players don’t try to take shortcuts, stay on pathways, and are extra careful in the dewy mornings.
Wildlife
Golf courses are known to have lots of wildlife! Be sure that there is a first aid kit and antihistamine handy. There are likely plenty of critters and bugs to be a nuisance, so you can never be too prepared for the hazards they may cause.
The Sun
More and more golfers are seeking to stay protected from harmful UV rays. When you are out there on the course, it is easy to lose track of time and not pay attention to the damage that the sun may be causing. Advise your members to take the sun rays seriously with a hat, plenty of water, and sunscreen. Regardless of the time of year, you should be equipped with these items for your members.
